From a very young age I’ve been influenced and inspired by eastern and western minimalist art and culture that’s focused on aesthetics, structure, texture and form. They held the idealistic view that insight and enlightenment can be gained through solitude and simplicity.
My mother studied painting and calligraphy in Japan in the traditional Sumi-e style, she Painted 6 foot tall scrolls that would hang in our home. I grew to appreciate this aesthetic and philosophy through her and the art and culture that is very prevalent in Hawaii.
I wanted to work with simple, basic shapes, where the purity of form is the focus. Having these forms animate, merge and subtract, allows us to see a new perspective. Exploring ideas of interconnectedness, emotions, interdependency, growth and impermanence. Onto these I layer influences from contemporary culture and my own personal experience.
Influences include: Mono-Ha movement, Kandinsky, Barbara Hepworth, Mondrian and Agnes Martin.
